Self Publishing
Saturday, 24 April 2010

Yes, it would be your first time to do self-publishing but that is not an excuse for you to commit mistakes.  Committing mistakes with your self-published book can project that it is made in an unprofessional way and can be hindrance to your success.  Here are some mistakes which you can easily avoid:

* Poor writing

Whenever we write, it is natural for us to miss a punctuation, spelling and make other typographical mistakes. But to allow these mistakes to appear on our book, will make us appear very unprofessional.  Just imagine readers reading the blurb page and finding mistakes from it which can be avoided if you only have gotten somebody review it for you before printing and distribution.

Another thing that you would have to consider is the flow of organization and thought.  If your book is disorganized then it can be difficult from some to read and understand.  You would have to make sure that you have a good and detailed outline to help you with the writing.  If you are having difficulties writing and think that you need somebody to help you out, then you can get a co-writer or an editor to check your work.

If you are writing a story or novel, remember that continuity is important.  There are some writers that would miss that out, for example if they have hazel eyes, then make sure that their eyes stay the same color throughout the story unless it is significant for the story to change it.  Avoid giving incorrect information and details.  Also avoid putting wrong captions in pictures and graphs, if ever you will use some.

* Inadequate book editing, formatting, and layout

You would have to invest on the formatting of the book.  Book sales can be affected by a bad cover or bad title.  You may need to get a book designer to do your book layout and your cover.  Booksellers recognize that jackets and covers are very important in clinching sales.  So do not sacrifice in getting a professional to do the cover design.

Aside from the cover, another thing that could affect book sales would be the format of its contents.  There are different formats, you can check books from your shelf or you can go to the library to look at some.  Things that you need to take note of would be the page distribution among the title pages, copyright pages, dedication pages and the start of the first chapter.

* Lack of promotion, marketing and distribution plan

Okay, you have already produced a good book.  It is already clean from mistakes, wrong spelling and typographical errors.  You would have to come up with a good marketing plan.  It is important not to miss this out.  Some self-published authors have overlooked this thinking that having a good book on their hands would be good enough.  But how will a book sell if readers do not even know it even exist?

You would have to make sure that you have a well-planned advertising, marketing and launching plan.  If you think you cannot pull it off, then do not hesitate to get an experienced person to help you out.

Aside from marketing, some self-published authors also tend to make mistakes in distribution. Make sure that your target audience gets to have a chance to buy your book.  Some authors would also overlook online distribution.  There are cost-efficient online distribution channels where you can have your book available.  Internet is becoming a convenient place for people to buy stuff that they want and need.

Another thing that self-publishing authors should not forget is getting ISBN numbers.  Actually, this is an easy thing to do.  There are websites that could give you instructions on how to buy ISBNs from RR Bowker; this is the U.S. ISBN agency.

Self-publishing is a balance between everything.  To be successful with the book, you do not have to just only write an excellent book but make opportunities for readers to be able to get acquainted and buy it.

If you have decided to go for self-publishing, then you have to prepare to handle everything.  A self-published author would have to deal with different aspects of book production, from writing and editing up to marketing and distributing the books.  It is a jam-packed job and you need to be prepared to handle that.

In addition to that, you will also need to prepare yourself against prejudices.  Self-published authors are often mistaken as good publishing houses "rejects." Therefore, there are some people who view self-published book second-rated.  It is up to you to prove them wrong!  There are writing tips that you can do to help them change their minds.

The first tip is to set expectations that are achievable.  Do not expectations that you know are beyond what you can do.  There is a fine line separating wishful thinking and realistic goal-setting.  Do no expect that you will get rich because of your book sales.  There are a lot of people who could be writing the same topic as your do.  Competition is tough.  You can choose to write something you are passionate about. Interest can be a great inspiration for effective writing.

Readers lose interest if your book is disorganized and events are disengaged. Organization is the key.  To make the book flow and the book organized, then prepare for writing an outline.  You can decide on the major areas that you would like to focus or highlight on your book.  These major areas could be the chapters itself.  When writing the chapters, make sure that you give then good titles, titles that will grab the reader's attention easily.

Also to keep your book organized, you can use sub-headings and bulleted points.  This would be easy for the reader's eyes and at the same systematic. If you would like to use pictures or illustrations in your book, make sure that they fit in the style and at the same time they do nod disrupt the flow of the book.  Photographs and illustrations are meant to increase the reader's understanding and supplement the text, not to distract the readers from it.

Good writers rarely do marathon writing.  Marathon writing would not make you finish a good material in a short period of time.  Sure thing, there are some writers that may find this style effective for them.  But it is not a good style for everybody.  Writers would mostly do short writing time every day.

Another thing that writers should be aware and avoid is the editing whenever you see something wrong.  This can be called premature editing.  Save editing for the end.  This is a practice that most successful writers do.  They would keep the momentum going and save the editing for later.

Another thing that you can do to make everything easy to the eyes is all about the format. Make sure that the words are not compressed.  Do not put too many words on a line. Normally it would contain about 50 to 60 characters, spaces included.  About 250 words per page would be enough.

Also use spaces adequately.  Nothing is more terrifying than reading a page where everything is text, text, text and no spaces at all.  But be conscious of using spaces.  They can signify something, depending on what is written.

A writer who will be taking advantage of self-publishing may be doing the tasks alone or hire somebody to help him, but he should never detach himself from others.  There are writers who would finish writing their manuscript faster if they have the support of their loved ones and family.

Before the boom of the internet world, the traditional publishers are the kings of the publishing world but now, there the Café press, Lulu, Create space and others that will help you to publish your book online.  The main characteristic of the boom of Self Publishing industry like Lulu is because of the traditional publisher's absence in the circulation.  Some of the traditional publishers will answer you, that they don't have enough budget to print your book, even if they had because of just a simple answer "manuscript rejection".  Compare to the self publishing that you are the editor of your own book.

There are different online publishers including the three companies mentioned earlier to produce your book as well as print them and ship them then distribute it, after that, they make profit from your writing.  Self-publishers are not that the type of publishers that will actually paid the writings but the author himself will pay for the printing.  Today, the successful self-publishers control the benefits of the services of print-on-demand.  Self-publishing outlets such as Café press, Lulu, Create space and others then will print-on-demand the more books that the customers will need and they will ship it as well as get the payments from the customers who order the books.

And as an author, you have anything to worry but waiting to collect your profits from the publishing outlets, and also you are the one to decide how much per book will out in the market.  And as an additional input, Café press, Lulu, Create space self-publishing services can accept from uploaded digital contents like Microsoft Word documents, PDFs, text files or even Rich Text Format files.  The format, size and design of the publication will come from the desire of the book author.  But the difference of online self publishing outlets to a typical self publishing in your neighborhood, the first one, they won't charge upon submission until there's an order coming in.

That's the time they will charge for the service charge for the base price of the printing on demand but you have the control of the final price that they will be charging to the buyer before shipping.  While the second type of self publishing in your neighborhood, will charge you upon submission to print them immediately.  Another thing, the neighborhood self publishing will not helping you to the marketing of your own book, the author will be the marketer.  They are the same in the matter of the control how much will each book will charge to the buyers.

There are additional charges that an online self publishing service for an additional services they will offer such as your cover design, they review and proofread your manuscript, as well as indexing, promoting and marketing your book.  They will also offer you to manage your book to register to have an ISBN (International Standard Book Number).

As an end for this article, the main characteristic of Self Publishing is to win the competition against the traditional publishers.  They will be available anywhere as long as you have the computer, an internet connection and valid email address to upload your manuscript.  You don't need to walk or take a drive to the publishing office just to submit your manuscript.  No need to go out.  Just sit back and relax in sending your manuscript.

Book publishing is not an easy activity and business. These days, the number of readers who invest in books is significantly declining because of the popularity of the Internet. Expect publishers to be stricter in accepting manuscripts and books for publishing. It is basically harder to impress publishers these days. If you are determined to become an author, you should turn to self-publishing.

Nobody says self-publishing would be easy. In fact, it could be as hard, if not much harder, than traditional book publishing. If you aim to become an author through self-publishing, you are bound to exert more effort. It would take simply much more for you to be able to launch your book, sell like hotcakes, and succeed.

But as always, the road to success is not always paved. Most of the time, it could be full of challenges. There are common obstacles that are often faced by authors who take a shot at self-publishing. Here are some of those.

Gathering enough money to fund the initiative could be exhilarating. Because you are publishing your own work, no other entity or people would be able to subsidize you or shoulder the costs for you. It is important that you have much money in the back prior to such an endeavor. Also, do not spend all you have in self-publishing your own book. You could never be sure whether you would be able to gain back or get returns for your investment. It would not be wise to make loans just to fund your book. The financials is always the top challenge that bothers self-publishers.

The second obstacle is the stigma about self-published books being amateurish. You could not blame critics for generalizing. Most of the time, self-published materials are of inferior quality. This could be because of the fact that the content did not pass through the scrutiny of editors and publishers, who set very high standards for book publishing. Third-party scrutiny and criticism could really help bolster the quality and appeal of books.

There are obstacles of promotion and marketing. Your book should be treated as a usual product, which should be targeted to specific audience or readers. How could people learn about your book if you would not make a fuss about it? As always you have to establish and raise awareness about your book. Doing so could just be difficult because you obviously and logically would need money. When putting up book publicity, you have to develop lists of book reviewers and editors who would make issues and critics about your content. They do not do services for free, whether they would say constructive or destructive opinions.

Minor obstacles could accumulate to provide greater problems. Bookstores are usually not dealing with small publishing firms, so how could you expect them to deal with independent publishers like you? Such stores only trust in dealing with major publishers, wholesalers, and distributors. Then there is a gush of intense or extreme competition. There are just too many authors like you who are aiming to mark big in the market. An influx of self-published books could make yours just among the crowd.

If you have the determination, the confidence, and the drive, you could proceed to self-publishing. Do not let such obstacles prevent you from doing so. But moreover, be practical and realistic.

With the emergence of modern copiers and sophisticated printing technology, many authors are now opting to get into self-publishing rather than to stick to conventional third-party printing. The reason could be quite obvious. Authors like the prospect of having to stick to their own creativity and style, without the need to please and fill the standards of publishers and editors. In terms of revenues, self-publishing is also promising greener pastures compared to the conventional kind of publishing.

Not known to many, self-publishing has been around even during the start of the industry's long and winding history. The practice has taken several forms through the years. These days, there are three major kinds of self-publishing that are adapted by authors, namely, vanity publishing, subsidy publishing, and true self-publishing.

In reality, vanity publishing is pejorative. The practice is that a publisher contracts with an author without giving much regard to the quality as well as marketability of content. The term is called such because in this arrangement, publishers are basically appealing to an author's vanity, which mainly is the desire to become a full-pledged published author. This kind of self-publishing is usually most attractive among new writers.

Vanity presses exist under the guise of subsidy or joint venture presses. However, in this arrangement, the author agrees to shoulder every cost of publication. He also agrees to take all the existing risks. Publishers have nothing to lose in vanity press deals. They would earn money from the fees they would collect from the authors (yes, the authors pay publishers fees for publishing their work). Many experts are advising writers to stay away from such presses.

In reality, many writers/authors are willingly and knowingly entering such deals because they are in principle putting more importance on having their work commercially published rather than on gaining profit from it. To some, vanity press is a stepping stone, more of a springboard into the tight publishing industry. Experts believe most published materials through vanity presses fail commercially because content is criticized by skeptics, distributors, and even readers. This could be because the quality is not judged by an independent body prior to massive printing.

Subsidy publishing is almost like vanity publishing only that in this arrangement, the publisher agrees to contribute some to costs, specifically in adjunct services like editing, warehousing, distribution, and in part, marketing. However, such adjunct services are most of the time minimal. In the long run, the commercial publisher possesses and owns the book, but the author gets royalties for every copy sold in the market. It is also a standard practice that subsidy publishers keep some rights in the book. Lastly, authors are given minimal say and control over other production aspects like cover design.

True self-publishing is the best option among all three. This is real self-publishing. In this setup, the author takes care of everything, from writing content, marketing, storage, distribution, and all other publishing aspects. Every right to the book is owned by the author. The books are registered as the author's intellectual property, with the author getting all the right to enjoy the proceeds from sales.

In the long run, true self-publishing is deemed most cost effective because the author could have control over variable publishing factors. He could also enjoy more freedom in terms of style and earning.

We have heard how great self-publishing is, it can give you control on your book and at the same time increase your profits.  But is something can really be this good?  Are there any downsides or disadvantages with going to self-publishing?  The answer is yes, everything has its pros and cons.

* Everything is in Your Hands

If you have decided to go for self-publishing, then you should be ready to multitask.  Compared with traditional publishing, they have editors, printers, and layout artists, cover artists who are available and ready to work for them anytime.  But in self-publishing you would have to handle all of this, if you cannot do it all, you have the option to get or hire somebody who can.  It would cost you additional, of course. But even if you outsourced, you will still need to oversee it and make sure that it meets your standards.

Time could be a major problem for some self-published authors.  There are some writers who have part time day jobs and would need to fit self-publishing schedule to their time.  Even marketing and promotion fall into your hands.

* Costs

In traditional publishing, the writer would get as much as 5 to 10 % of the sales.  But it self-publishing, you can increase the profit to as much as 50 %.  But the downside is that you would have to subsidize everything beforehand.  It is a risk.  You can spend about $5,000 for self-publishing, but you cannot guarantee that it everything will be returned to you.

Most of the times, you would need to get a distributor since book sellers are not that willing to buy books directly from the author.  The author would have to get discounts to the distributor and the bookseller; this would be less than your expected 50 % profit.  Another problem would be when the book does not sell that much.  Aside from less profit, some bookstores would return the book and ask for a refund.  Some self-publishers would draft a contract that would not allow returns and refund, in a special price of course.

Competition can be tough.  Readers would not easily buy your book.  You will need to give them a reason to buy your book over books with the same topic.  Marketing and publicity could be a key.  And you would have to spend on that, too.

* The Reputation

Another problem that self-publishers encounter is the reputation and credibility of being self-published.  There are some readers who do not regard self-published books highly.  Sad to say, some people are extremely biased against self-published authors, thinking that just because major publishing houses have refused the author; it means the book is not good enough.

* The Writer

They say that a book is like a writer's own child.  It would be difficult to criticize and disparage your own kid, right?  Because authors would have to do everything, editing included, it can be difficult to be objective all the time.  They can protect parts that are not really important or aesthetically weak.  They can have difficulties letting go of some parts which are totally insignificant.  That is why we have editors.  But if an author would be his own editor, then there can be biases.

Self-publishing is a risk, you can spend a lot of money but the returns could be low.  But come to think of it, everything is a risk.  Risk is part of success.

For writers, being able to write without restrictions and editors cutting what they have written is a great concept.  Getting your message across is very important for a writer, but it could be very difficult if the publisher and the editors are breathing behind your neck.

Some writers who have no experience with self-publishing often think twice because of the cost.  In traditional publishing, the publisher would shoulder the costs and the author would not have to worry about it.  But with self-publishing, the author would to shoulder the expenses.  Currently, a book can be produced with as much as $5000.

When self-publishing, you can be the author who is doing the hiring for editors, cover artists, publishers or printers and distributors.  On the other hand there are self-publishing businesses or companies that are dedicated to produce or sell your book or CD.  There are three main stages when self-publishing:

* Creating, writing, editing and providing illustrations if needed.

* Preparing the manuscript for printing.

* Marketing and distributing the book or in other words selling it.

Of course, the first process that needs to be completed will be completion of the book itself.  It is true that with self-publishing, you can publish everything.  The reason that most writers cannot get their works published is that they did not fit the standards of the publisher.  But since you do not have to get any publisher's approval, then you can publish everything.  You just have to be sure that what you have to publish is something really good.

To be an effective writer, you would have to touch the heart of the audience.  That means in the start of the writing process, you would need to identify your target audience and write for them.  Although, self-publisher's are not that too concerned with the profits, it would still be worth it if you have a really good book on your hands.

If you would have to go for a self-publishing company, then most of them would do the entire thing.  Once you are done with your book and your manuscript, then you would have to just give it to the company and they would choose the publishing needs based on your requirements.   Everything, of course, would be for your approval.

But the author needs to submit everything or things in order for the publisher.  Once you have submitted the specifications, but later decided to change something, it can cost you additional fees.  So you would have to be sure that what you have submitted is the final stuff.

Everything goes back to the author.  Once the book is done, the author will have to approve the layout and design of what is inside and outside the book.  This would allow the author to have the final decisions over the book.  If it gets approved then the printing will start.  Again, the printed copies will go back to the author for a nod of approval.  When it is done, it would be distributed.

Self-publishing companies would also include, sometimes in their packages, other kind of services.  Sometimes self-publishing companies would take care of getting copyright for the book, ensure that it would comply international standards, promotional materials, and other necessities that would give the self-published and edge.

Self-publishing could sound full of tasks or tiring, but if you would like to be successful then it would require a lot of patience and at the same time hard work.  But it would sure be worth something in the end.

Looking to our economy, although it is upside down and most of the writers still decided to start in self publishing of their book.  Most of the writers publish their own book because not being satisfied in their chosen traditional publisher.  Before you decide to enter in Self Publishing, you must be aware that on the first months, earning much is not your top priority. If you want to earn $30,000 a month or even more, just read carefully on the steps in the next paragraphs.

First you have to do is to write a helpful book.  You have to think for a particular topic that will be useful to any reader.  You don't write a book that you are not sure if will be helpful to the readers.  I am not saying that fiction books are not helpful because of its fictitious event and characters.

Next, you must identify your target audience.  Are you after the below 5 years old or the teens or the adults.  Who do you think are your immediate target audience? Are they professionals, paraprofessionals, or just an ordinary individual? Who do you think would be easier to find a market as your reader? Is it the reader of Harry Potter or the readers of Marketing and Strategies?

Self-publishing a book is something that requires balance in all aspects.  It requires good promotion and marketing for a book to be known in the market and therefore, increase its sales.  But how could you have a well-rounded marketing plan if you have limited sources?  Most self-published authors would have to work with a limited budget.

There are simple steps that you can do to start promoting your book in a cost-efficient way.  Here are some things that you can easily do.

* Maximize the internet. You can start talking about your book in blogs.  You can also start joining discussion groups about books.  There are readers and book enthusiasts that are eager to discover good self-published book.  There are different websites that posts book reviews online.  You can ask them if they would like to do a review of your book.  This would give your book an opportunity to be rated and promoted at the same time. Bu you have to remember to be conscious when posting about your book, you do not want to sound fresh out of the Yellow Pages.  You can answer their inquiries and at the same time provide some information about your book.  You can even create your own website.

* Another cost-efficient way to promote your book is to attend writer conventions, conferences, and other events.  Just make sure that you would have business cards with you and ready to take contact information for possible contact people.  If you feel that there are no conventions or any events that you can go to, then why not bring the event to you and your book?  You can organize book talks, whether it is a small or a big event, the important thing is that you have done something.  You can talk to colleges and libraries if it is possible for you to host readings or local literary events.  You do not have to spend a lot of money to host activities.

* Another easy marketing tip the self-publishing authors could do is write a press release.  A press release should contain the description of the book, written in a way that would draw the interest of different media outlets.  If you have no experience in writing press releases, then there are many websites that could help you write press releases.

* Do not underestimate the power of online distribution; you can have your book in Amazon or any other similar websites.  This would help you promote your book.

* Also, do not forget that nobody could spread the word faster than friends, relatives and family.  Make sure that they read the book and promote it for you.  News spread fast.

* Another fact is that there are some people who are very excited on knowing that you are an author, so they would buy a book and put it into their shelves and actually say that they know the writer.  There is nothing wrong in taking advantage of that way of thinking.  So make sure that you have a business card anywhere you go.  Also include the book information in your book, so they would get the idea that you are an author.

Marketing and promotion is not something that you can do successfully overnight.  Whether you are into self-publishing your book or a publishing house is doing it for you, nothing is wrong if you would be promoting your book.  You would also have to remember the promoting a book is something that would require patience, persistence and enthusiasm.

Different authors have different reasons for self-publishing. If you are aiming to write and publish your own book, you should make it a point to check out your own motives for doing so. You have to make sure your motivations are strong and valid so you could get on and possibly achieve success. You would need more guts because it is just exhilarating and financially draining.

If no publishing company is willing to take chances on you, you could opt to self-publish your own book. Be ready to shoulder all the costs and take care of just about everything, from writing, to editing, to publishing, and marketing. Here are the most common motivations why authors prefer self-publishing.

An author is rejected by any major publisher because of several obvious and logical reasons. First, he could be unknown to the book industry. Face the truth. Most successful book authors are celebrities or icons in their own fields. No publisher could be willing to gamble on nobody because readers would not be easily open to reading content from nobody. Second, the topic could be obscure.

An author may feel good about an issue, but most other people think it is irrelevant and boring. On the contrary, a very controversial topic for a book is also avoided because no publisher would ever want to face legal hurdles and battles for any unknown author. The subject could be of interest only to a minimal amount of the population.

Lastly, the author's writing style, genre, and grammar is simply rejected.

Another reason for any author to go self-publishing is that he desperately desires complete editorial and artistic freedom. The author may not agree with any modifications required by the publisher. It is common for some writers to resist criticisms and changes especially if they think such are destructive to their ego.

He may be targeting to take complete control and rights to the intellectual aspect of the book. The author might feel he needs to make sure the rights, sales, database, and fame of the book remain his. Then, he could be motivated by the low overall publishing expense of the book. He could also feel more confident and comfortable with the idea that he is publishing independently.

If authors have no other resort like self-publishing, the history of book publishing industry could have probably been different. Some of the most unforgettable booksellers worldwide were classics that originally had been published independently by authors. Examples are the phenomenal ?In Search of Excellence' (Tom Peters), ?The Joy of Cooking' (Irma Rombauer), ?Spartacus' (Howard Fast), ?Poems' (Oscar Wilde), and ?Chicken Soup for the Soul' (Mark Victor Hansen and Jack Canfield).

To sum it up, be reminded that self-publishing is not an entirely new practice. In fact, it has been around, though in different forms, since time immemorial.  These days, self-publishing is logically increasing amid further advancement of the modern-age publishing technology. With the emergence of desktop publishing systems, xerography, the Internet, and print on demand, self-publishing is becoming a clear phenomenon in the changing publishing industry.

But are you cut for it? Not all authors have what it takes to survive and make good in having to self-publish a book. Before you get into such an endeavor, be wise to think once, twice, thrice, and many times over.
