Tuesday, 25 August 2009
An all-inclusive vacation has always been popular especially for people who are visiting England for the first time. The notion that you will only need to pay for a one-set price for transportation, foods, drinks, accommodations and tours is certainly appealing.
When all-inclusive vacation is a good idea:
* You have a set budget and it is important to determine in advance how much is the total cost of the trip.
* The purpose of the trip is pure exploration.
* You are the type of person who wants a structured vacation because you don't want to worry about when to eat, where to go, where to sleep, etc.
* If you are not willing to take chances or risk paying more on taxi, hotel accommodation and meals.
* If the price of the all-inclusive is much cheaper than the cost of its components when taken individually.
* You are going to a place where you do not speak the language and do not have the time to learn either.
* It's a destination you are not familiar with; do not have any idea on how to get around; and do not want to spend some time being lost.
When all-inclusive vacation is not a good idea:
* The purpose of the trip is to explore the destination at your own pace and go to different attractions without being conscious of the time.
* You know how to get around the place, the commute and the roads that will lead you to good and affordable restaurants and attractions.
* You do not have the time to go online and search for websites that offer all-inclusive vacation.
* When you can get bargain flights and discounted hotel accommodation. It also makes sense if you can get last minute all-inclusive vacation that is set at a bargain.
* When you cannot pay today for the trip that is scheduled months in advance.
* You don't want to get stuck with the group as you tour around the city.
How to select an all inclusive vacation
* Choose a theme
There are lots of things to do in England that you cannot fit everything in one trip, so try to limit your choices on one or two specific themes where you can enjoy the best England has to offer. Do you want to go romantic, historical, cultural, or simply want to know more about the city by exploring the streets and mingling with the locals? Do you want an architectural vacation, or wild-life tours? Do you like non-traditional tours like wine tasting, art and cooking?
* Know your options
There are lots of guided and unguided all-inclusive vacation packages that fit to your chosen theme. If you are on a limited budget, there are budget all-inclusive trips for you. Students can get a good discount for trips as well.
* Search online
Do your research online. Find out what are the different tours and packages that websites offer. Use the internet to book for an all-inclusive England vacation according to your chosen theme, budget and preferences.
One more thing:
There is no other place in the world where you can go from one place to another as easy and as convenient as in England. Once you land on the ground, you can literally use any modes of transportation from train, car rentals and bus to plane and ship. Even riding a bicycle is a great way to explore the city.

Here is the basic information you need to know on your England vacation:
Arrival and Departure
When arriving or departing to and from England, you will probably land at the Heathrow Airport, the largest airport and one of the busiest airports in the world. It is located 15 miles (24km) west of central London; or at London Gatwick Airport, the second largest airport in the England, which is 28 miles (45km) south of central London. (No departure tax.)
Both airports are connected to London by an underground railway network. The city can also be reached by taxi that is available outside each airport's terminal.
Flight to England
It takes more than 8 hours if you are traveling from New York and longer if you are departing from central U.S., the mid-west, the southern Atlantic state, or the west coast.
Time to visit
The best time to visit England is during the months of July to September, when the weather is at its best and daylight hours are the longest. However, this is also the time when tourists visit England so the rates are higher, the streets are more crowded and the queues are longer. Low season is from November to March. If you do not mind the chilling cold of England winter and would like to take advantage of the cheaper rates, then take your pick from these months. Shoulder season is from April to June and the month of October.
Where to go
England may be a small country but it offers a lot of attractions, museums and world renowned sights that you should not miss visiting. Visit some of the following sites: the Buckingham Palace, the Westminster Abbey, the British Museum, the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye, the National Gallery, Shakespeare's Globe Theater, St. Paul's Cathedral, Sir John Soane's Museum, the Tower of London, the Tower Bridge, Notting Hill, the Trafalgar Square and the Admiralty Arch, among others.
Where to stay
Hotels are abundantly available especially in major cities such as London, Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle and Liverpool. However, hotels in these cities are very expensive especially during the high season. Premium price is paid for rooms with bathrooms.
For a budget traveler, Bed and Breakfasts are the preferred choice. They are cheap, clean, convenient, comfortable and hospitable. Bathrooms are often shared with other guests but the rooms are generally comfortable.
Getting around
* Renting a car - If you are traveling as a group and planning to explore the country side, then renting a car is a good choice. But pass on car rental option if you will spend most of your time in the city.
Note: The driver seat is at the right hand side of the vehicle.
* Bus, taxi and the Tube -Busses, taxis and trains are the most popular means to get around the city. London is popular for its double-decker busses. All cities and towns have bus services as well. All cities have taxi services. Taking the underground railways system in London (or what is commonly referred to as the Tube) is a good experience. Suburban rail services are available in Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool and the cities in Newcastle and South Yorkshire. Tram routes are available in south London.
* Boats - Commuter and leisure boat services are available on the River Thames.

It is almost given that when one speaks of an England vacation, it gives an impression of an expensive trip. Thus, many who dream of visiting the British Museum, cheering for the football team Manchester United, taking a road trip to Stonehenge and other English cities and countryside remain as a dream for they don't have the money to pay for the trip. But it doesn't always have to be that way. There are techniques to keep your expensive low without compromising the total English experience.
Pick a good time to go - Cities in England, during high-season can provide the best weather and extra hours of daytime. However, places can be too crowded and too expensive. Off-season on the other hand can be very wet but, hey. if you want to save on plane tickets and accommodation or if you want a less crowded vacation with a different English experience, this one is for you.
Shop for cheap plane tickets - Plane tickets can cover a big chunk of your travel budget so it is only fitting that if we want to cut big on expenses, one of the first things we should be concerned of is buying cheap plane tickets. Search online. There are lots of travel agency sites that offer good deals both on early bookings and last minute flight reservation.
Travel by train (if you plan to visit other European countries) - Europe is a fairly small continent and getting from one country to another only requires a few hours of train ride. So instead of booking for expensive plane tickets, requiring you to be at the airport early, going through a rigorous security procedures, waiting for a flight, and experiencing the same old boring plane ride, take the train. Not only you will see the countryside between cities, you can also by package where you can travel to a certain number of countries on limited days for unlimited train rides as necessary for one set price.
Skip the fancy hotel - We are all victims of luxury but if we want to stretch our vacation dollar in England, we should quit browsing for fancy hotels online. A night stay can cost more than what you earn in a week. So instead of star-rated hotels prefer cheap dorm beds and budget chain hotels. They offer your basic requirement in accommodation. After all, when you arrive in England, you would not spend most your time in your hotel room. Search for cheap hotels online to get the best rate.
Skip the fancy restaurants - Aside from visiting infamous sites, tasting the local flavor is perhaps one of the better things to experience in England. However, if you choose to eat at fancy restaurants and local cafés that are flocked by tourists, be prepared. A typical lunch in a fancy restaurant and even in unsuspicious cafés can cost you big time. A good way to save on food is to eat where locals eat. Don't look just for a restaurant, watch where common people are going during lunch time. They can lead you to where delectable foods are, without the cost.
Finally, follow the road less traveled - An England vacation may be defined by the Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, Big Ben and Westminster Abbey. But the truth is there is more to England than these infamous sites. I am not saying that you skip the places you to visit.
What I mean is there are lots of things to do in England that are inexpensive and equally enjoyable.

England is a small country but its size can be deceiving. You might try to pack your day with many activities, spending your entire day hopping from one place to another. Take note that England roads are narrow and winding so travel time is much slower than you would have expected. Trying to do too much for too little time can be stressful and can definitely ruin your vacation. Limit your destination to a manageable level. Leave something for the next day.
No hotel for the first few hours
Upon arriving in London early morning (if you booked an overnight flight from the United States), you can stay at the airport for the first few hours, wash up and probably change clothes. Hotels charge the full amount regardless of the check-in time, heading towards your hotel from the airport can be very expensive (rooms are often unavailable until 3 in the afternoon). If you are renting a car, you can store your luggage in your car and head directly to your destination. If you are staying in the city, you can make arrangements to store your bags at the hotel until your room is ready. On the first day, keep your activities light. This is the best time to take the double-decker bus tour. Do not take a nap when the room is ready. What you should do is wash up, eat an early dinner, go to be early, and get ready for the second day.
Take the double-decker bus tours
This is the best way to go around the city of London. You can choose between the Big Bus Company and the Original Tour. Their buses are designed for sightseeing and touring the city.
Combine bed and travel
This goes to those who plan to visit other European countries aside from England. Sleeping while in transit is the best way to save travel time as well as money. However, this doesn't mean catching a few hours of sleep while on board a train or a plane. You can take inter-city trains that offer sleeping cabins for overnight trips. Make sure to take any available options when traveling long distances.
Do not spend your entire time in London
A week stay in London is long enough to visit most of its attractions, theaters, and museums, but it is a big mistake if you don't go outside the city. Not only you will miss lots of sights, you will also be limited to one part of the country. And since the best side of England is seen in the countryside and villages make sure that a good amount of time of your vacation is allocated in exploring the country.
What you will miss if you stay in London for your entire vacation: Roman Bath, Stonehenge, Salisbury, Lake District, York, Windsor Castle, Stratford-upon-Avon, and a lot more.
Rent a car
There is no better way to roam around England than by traveling at your own pace, eating whenever you like, stopping anytime to take snapshots of the countryside and staying where you please as long as you like. These things can only be done by renting a car.
Car rental is best if done with two or more people. And it is often the least expensive option especially if the expenses in gas, paying tolls, insurance and parking fees are shared.

If you frequently go to England and a self-proclaimed seasoned traveler, the last thing you want is for this article to sound as if your mother knocks from your front door and as soon as she enters, she starts enumerating things that you should do while on an England vacation like a litany that never ends. But if you are like most guys out there who is traveling to England for the first time, then you probably still would mind your mother barging to your house but consider this article helpful. Here are the things you should know before going to England:
Hotels in London
When you visit England, do not spend all your nights in London if you have plans to visit other places. London hotels are outrageously expensive. Even the grungiest hotels cost $150 a night. Do not accept travel package that includes nights in London and day tours outside the city.
No hotels upon arrival or at least on the first few hours
If you are on an overnight flight, you will arrive in London early morning. Instead of checking in a hotel and paying the full amount for a few hours, you can stay rest and wash up at the airport.
Guided Tours
If it is available, take guided tours at most attractions, especially if it is your first visit.
Public Manners
British people are in general, well-mannered, polite and self-disciplined. Basic respect is expected.
Privacy
You can observe this in parks and other public places: British people keep their distance from one another. This is to respect someone else's privacy and space. If you are on a train, on a bus or in a public attraction, keep these in mind. It is also impolite to stare at other people.
Bed and Breakfast
B&BS are the England's version of America's Motels. They are relatively cheaper compared to hotels. B&BS are clean, convenient, comfortable and hospitable. Be ready to share bathrooms with other guests.
Food
Before you call the manager or storm the kitchen, you have to understand that English cooks food differently from what Americans understand. So always remember that.
England, unlike other European countries, is not known for their food.
"Salad" doesn't mean something with mayonnaise. "Salad" means something with greens. So when you order a "shrimp salad", don't expect to get "shrimp with mayonnaise", instead, expect shrimp with tossed green salad.
Butter is used in most sandwiches instead of mayonnaise; eggs are fried in the in oil until crisp and brown; toasts are crisps all throughout, but cooled; sausages are like hot dogs, bready and mild; bacon is soft, similar to Canadian bacon; baked beans are considered breakfast food.
Safety and security
Unlike the usual neighborhood in the United States, England is a very safe place. You can roam around anywhere, anytime of the day without having to worry a bit. The worst crime you can ever experience, if you will experience a crime (I am not wishing that you do) is pick pocketing. To be safe, do not flaunt your wealth. If you feel uncomfortable to the place, trust your gut and turn around.
Queues
It might be an obsession but a good one, English people like to form orderly queues in everything they that needs to be queued on and they expect tourists to practice it. Jumping ahead of your turn is a no-no.
